Lamp post lights are an effective and beautiful way to illuminate a large area of your garden, driveways and exterior paths. Pillar lights are also a perfect way to highlight certain features of your garden.
How Tall Are Garden Post Lights?
Garden post lights stand around 2 metres high, much lower than the average UK street light. Unless you have a very expansive outside space that needs a large area to be lit, then a garden lamp post at around 6ft high will be the perfect height.
Outdoor Pillar Lights
Garden pillar lights are shorter than post lights and are generally around 1 metre high, meaning they look can be installed on the ground or on a low wall. A pillar light typically has a traditional style lantern at the top to house the bulb.
How Far Apart Post Lights Should Be
In the UK, lamp posts must be located within 200 yards of each other, but you’re free to place them where you like on your own property. A good rule of thumb for how far apart your own garden lamp posts should be is to ensure that the outdoor space has no dark areas. Slightly overlap the illuminated areas to get an even coverage.
Domestic garden lighting, including post lights, does not require planning permission: on you’re own private property you simply need to make sure the lighting does not disturb others.
Driveway & Garden Bollard Lights
A similar height to pillar lights, bollard lights are simply the modern aesthetic equivalent. Our outdoor bollard lights make ideal walkway lights for a home with a modern design. They are also excellent for illuminating driveways and decking. Our deck post lights can be easily fixed into the ground with our ground anchors.
Our black bollard lights are particularly popular for adding sleek contemporary lighting to the exterior of your home.
PIR Garden Lamp Posts
Many of our garden lamp post lights can be installed with a PIR motion sensor for added security and used with bright LED bulbs.
Modern & Traditional Designs
Our range of outdoor post and pillar lights come in traditional and contemporary styles, to suit the aesthetic of your home. Our traditional outdoor post lights feature glass panelled lanterns and ornate details in the metalwork to replicate the popular Victorian lamp posts. Many of our period style lamp posts also have two or three arm lanterns to provide extra illumination.
On the other hand, our modern bollards and pillar lights have minimalistic designs and often diffuses the light to cast more interesting shadows. Both of our ranges classic and modern outdoor lights are suitable for modern energy-efficient LED bulbs.
Outdoor Post Light Finishes
Our outdoor lights come in a range of colours and finishes to be durable and weather resistant as well as aesthetically pleasing! Our traditional outdoor lights come in old bronze, brass, and copper finishes, whereas our more contemporary ranges features stainless steel, black, and white finishes.
Coastal Corrosion Resistant Lights
If you’re within a few miles of the coast, your home is likely to be exposed to salty spray and air, which can corrode some materials. Many from our range stainless steel outdoor lighting are made using Marine Grade steel used in ship building, and are very resistant to the salt.
Installing Post Lights
A professional electrician is always recommended to install outside lighting that is connected to the mains and has earth bonding and protection against overload. The lights are connected via underground cables and secured using concrete or an equally strong base with masonry bolts.
